When a couple experiences difficulty conceiving, both partners should be assessed for low fertility. Male factors, such as low sperm count, are responsible in about 40% of infertile couples. An additional 40% of infertile couples have problems traced to the female partner, such as irregular ovulation or imbalance of reproductive hormones.

If you and your partner have been unable to conceive a child after a year of regular unprotected intercourse, or are in your 30s and want to know if you can delay having children for a few more years, a fertility evaluation would be prudent.
