Greenlight Laser Therapy
What is Greenlight Laser Therapy?
Greenlight Laser Therapy is a minimally invasive surgical technique primarily used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a common condition characterised by enlargement of the prostate gland.
The therapy utilises a high-energy laser to remove prostate tissue that blocks urine flow, improving symptoms without the need for more invasive surgery. Greenlight laser therapy has a faster recovery and less bleeding compared to the conventional TURP treatment. It is a suitable option for patients on blood thinner medication or with an implanted pacemaker.
How Greenlight Laser Therapy Works?
Greenlight Laser Therapy employs a fibre-optic endoscopic tool that delivers a high-intensity green wavelength laser directly to the prostate tissue. This specific wavelength is effectively absorbed by the blood, allowing it to precisely target and vaporise overgrown prostate cells without affecting surrounding tissues.
As the laser energy is applied, it instantly seals blood vessels, minimising bleeding, a significant advantage over traditional surgical methods.
Indications for Greenlight Laser Therapy
Greenlight Laser Therapy is recommended for several clinical indications:
- Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH): Primarily used to vaporise excess prostate tissue, relieving symptoms like frequent urination and urinary urgency.
- Urinary Tract Conditions: Indicated for other conditions causing tissue enlargement in the urinary tract, leading to obstruction.
Benefits of Greenlight Laser Therapy
Greenlight Laser Therapy offers multiple advantages for patients undergoing treatment for prostate and other urinary tract conditions:
-
Minimally Invasive
The procedure requires only a tiny incision or sometimes none, reducing the risk of infection and speeding up recovery time.
-
Rapid Symptom Relief
Patients often experience quick relief from symptoms such as urinary retention and decreased urine flow.
-
Low Bleeding Risk
The laser seals blood vessels as it cuts, significantly reducing the risk of bleeding during and after the procedure.
-
Quick Recovery
Most patients return to normal activities soon after the procedure, typically within a few days.
-
High Efficacy
The therapy is highly effective for many patients in reducing prostate size and alleviating symptoms, with lasting results.
Possible Side Effects and Complications
While Greenlight Laser Therapy is generally safe, like all medical procedures, it does carry potential risks and side effects:
- Temporary Urinary Symptoms: Some patients may experience burning sensations, frequent urination, or blood in the urine shortly after the procedure.
- Retrograde Ejaculation: A common side effect where semen flows backwards into the bladder instead of out through the penis during ejaculation.
- Urinary Tract Infection (UTI): The procedure can increase the risk of infections, necessitating careful monitoring and possibly antibiotics.
- Need for Re-treatment: In some cases, additional treatment may be required if symptoms recur or the initial procedure does not fully alleviate the obstruction.
- Rare Complications: Although uncommon, there can be more serious complications such as strictures (narrowing of the urethra) or bladder damage.
Patient Preparation
Proper preparation is important for ensuring the success and safety of Greenlight Laser Therapy. Here are the key steps involved:
Medical Evaluation and Medication Review
Patients undergo a thorough evaluation, including a detailed medical history and physical examination. All medications are reviewed, particularly blood thinners, which may need to be adjusted or temporarily discontinued to reduce bleeding risks.
Pre-Procedure Testing
Diagnostic tests, such as urine tests, blood tests, and imaging studies like ultrasound or MRI, are performed to map the prostate and guide treatment.
Fasting
Patients are generally advised to fast for several hours before the procedure, especially if sedation or anaesthesia will be used

What to Expect in Greenlight Laser Therapy
Understanding what to expect during Greenlight Laser Therapy can help patients prepare mentally and physically for the procedure. Here are the typical steps involved:
Anaesthesia
Depending on the extent of the procedure and the patient's comfort, local, regional, or general anaesthesia is administered to minimise pain and discomfort during the surgery.
Procedure
A small scope is inserted through the urethra to reach the prostate. The Greenlight laser is then used to vaporise excess prostate tissue, improving urinary flow. The entire process is monitored visually to ensure accuracy and safety.
Monitoring
After the procedure, patients are taken to a recovery area, where they are closely monitored for immediate complications or adverse reactions.
Discharge
Most patients are discharged the same day, although some may require overnight observation. Before leaving, patients receive detailed post-operative care instructions, including pain management and signs of complications to watch for.
Recovery and Post-Procedure Care
Recovery from Greenlight Laser Therapy generally proceeds smoothly with appropriate care:
-
Initial Symptoms
Temporary discomfort, urinary urgency, or blood in urine may occur, typically resolving within a few weeks.
-
Activity Restrictions
Strenuous activities should be avoided for a few weeks; normal activities can usually resume quickly.
-
Hydration and Diet
Increasing fluid intake is recommended to aid urinary flow, along with avoiding alcohol and caffeine initially.
-
Follow-up Appointments
Essential for monitoring recovery and ensuring improved urinary function.
-
Watching for Complications
Seek medical attention if experiencing severe pain, fever, or persistent bleeding.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can Greenlight Laser Therapy be repeated if symptoms reoccur?
Yes, the therapy can be repeated. While many patients experience long-lasting relief, some may require additional treatments if symptoms return.
Is Greenlight Laser Therapy suitable for all ages?
Generally, it is suitable for older adult patients, particularly those with medical conditions, which makes traditional surgery riskier. However, suitability varies based on the person’s health, so a consultation is necessary.
How does Greenlight Laser Therapy impact sexual function?
Most patients do not experience significant changes in sexual function. However, retrograde ejaculation can occur in some cases, which does not generally affect sexual pleasure but may impact fertility.
How long before I see improvements in symptoms after the procedure?
Improvements can be noticed when the catheter is removed, typically within 24 to 48 hours post-procedure. Full benefits may take a few weeks to manifest as the body heals.
